    Review of parking charges

As part of its budget setting the Council has reviewed its prices and charging periods for car parks. Charges were last increased in April 2004 and the increases proposed from April 2006 will remain in place until April 2008.

To encourage shoppers extend their visit and take advantage of the new King's Lynn town centre shops, the short-term charges for parking for 3 hours or longer will remain fixed at the 2004 charge without any increase. The evening charge for use of the St James multi-storey at £1.00 will also remain unchanged.

Short-term charges for 1 hour and 2 hours will now be £1.00 and £1.50 respectively. The new charges will affect all car parks, including the new St James multi-storey.

Long-term charges will be increased by 10p across the board. This is an overall increase of 5.8% over the 2 years, since the last price increase.

There is a clear link between the use of the new multi-storey and the other pay and display car parks in King's Lynn. It is therefore proposed that a flat £1.00 charge will be made for parking on Sundays in all car parks. Again, this will be held until April 2008.

This also reflects the increasing trend for Sundays to be normal shopping days with a
high proportion of shops open, a car parking charge for Sundays will be introduced from 1 April 2006. This also enables staffing and increased car park security on Sundays.

A new 30-minute stay for 60p will be introduced on the Saturday Market and Tuesday Market Place car parks. This minimum stay charge will be available seven days a week.

Normal charges are also to be introduced to cover Bank Holidays.

Car parking charges for the car parks in Hunstanton and Heacham will also be going up. Charges for the central car park in Hunstanton will be fixed to the short-term charges for King's Lynn. Charging is already in place on Sundays in all resort car parks.

The resort car parks at Hunstanton and Heacham charges will be standardised with 1-hour parking at £1.20, 2 hours at £2.20 and all day for £3.60. Heacham will continue to offer a 30-minute stay at 60p.

Proposals considered, but rejected, included the introduction of an evening charge on all car parks (including those in Hunstanton), charges for disabled parking (which is currently free of charge) and the potential introduction of pay and display at Hunstanton's Valentine Road and Lynn's Gaywood car parks.

Consultation has taken place with the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Centre Partnership and the recommendations above will now be forwarded to Cabinet and Council. If approved as recommended, the charges will apply from 1 April 2006.

    the Mayor of Lynn
It's the oldest fair in the country, dating back to 1537, and was opened by the Mayor at 12 noon on Valentine's Day.
Locals refer to "Mart Weather" - as it always snows during Mart week. However, the weather looks set to be a lot milder than usual this year!

  • Because of the Mart, there is no traffic access to the Tuesday market Place until Tuesday, 2nd March.

    Multi-storey makes parking easier

The Borough Council is encouraging visitors to use Lynn's new multi-storey car park during this years Mart. The new car park, located opposite the Swimming Pool, has already made a huge impact on the town by making parking a lot easier.

The impressive looking, sandy-coloured, building blends in well with the town's "new look" and was selected by the AA as the "Best in Britain".

It offers 701 spaces as well as motor bike and cycle parking. Lockers for helmets, toilets, and even a baby change facility are all located withing the multi-storey. There's free parking at ground level for disabled people.

The car park has excellent lighting and a CCTV system with over 50 cameras making it a safer place to park. Parking fees are the same as the other short term car parks, but with the advantage of being under cover.
