    Plans for new marina

    artist impressionWork is about to start on the master plan for Lynn's new £20 million Boal Quay Marina.

    Construction is due to start "within a couple of years", say the council. Building consultants are expected to be appointed by mid-March.

    The master plan may also involve redeveloping the Friars Fleet area of Lynn.

    The development's been been planned in two phases, starting with building a marina with a sea lock to the River Great Ouse tock to the River Great Ouse to provide moorings for sea-going vessels.

    Phase two involves the creation of a navigable waterway along the River Nar, connecting to the Great Ouse Relief Channel at Saddlebow, linking the new marina to the inland waterways system.

    The new marina could berth up to 250 vessels.

    Human League to top Festival Too line-up

    Human League Top Eighties band the Human League are to top the bill at this years Festival Too.

    Other top bands appearing will be Bad Manners, featuring Busta Bloodvessel, and Doctor and the Medics.

    Supporting bands will include local bands Birkenhead and The Blues Tubes. Norwich band Dynamite will also make an appearance.

    Festival Too is one of the biggest free festivals in Europe, attracting thousands of people.

    New lady Mayor for King's Lynn

    The new Mayor for King's Lynn and West Norfolk is to be Councillor Ann Clery-Fox.

    She will be nominated at the 'Mayor-making' ceremony, on 11 May 2006, for the forthcoming year.

    Ann Clery-Fox has been a Borough Councillor since 2001, representing the Walpole ward. Before that she was a County Councillor for 4 years and a member of the Planning and Transportation, Museums and Education Committees. She has lived in Norfolk for 30 years and taught at St Clement's High School for many years before becoming Chairman of the Governors.

    Deputy Mayor will be Cllr Kathy Mellish, the member for Downham Market Old Town.

    Lesley Garrett to top festival line-up

    Two musical legends - world-famous soprano Lesley Garrett and pianist Alfred Brendel - will head the line-up of famous names at this summer's King's Lynn Festival.

    Lesley Garrett, who was a great hit two years ago, is returning with a new programme of songs on July 18.

    Alfred Brendel, who rarely appears outside London, will give his first recital at King's Lynn on July 27.

    New Shops Open

    Two new shops have opened in the redevelopment area of the town centre.

    The new Woolworths super-store, in New Conduit Street, is now officially open for business.

    If you can't get to the store itself, you can always order Woolies products online at: www.woolworths.co.uk

    Another new shop, Heaven Scent, has just opened in Broad Street opposite the old Woolworths. Heaven Scent specialises in "Yankee Candles", a range of scented candles which are really big in the USA.

    Site clearance under way for 900 new houses

    Site clearance is under way in preparation for the building of 900 new houses in the Nar Ouse Regeneration Area in King's Lynn.

    The first 195 houses and apartments will be built on the land at the southern end of the site, which will also include a business park, community facilities and a riverside park. The development is on land, which has been cleaned up to remove contamination resulting from previous industrial uses.

    The NORA project will also spearhead the creation a business park, marina, associated residential and commercial developments and areas of landscaped open space across a 50-hectare site.

    Dynamite for Festival Too 2006

    Norwich band DYNAMITE have been invited to act as the main support act for this year's Festival Too outdoor concert, having also opened the festival in 2005. DYNAMITE describe themselves as a "high energy party band", and perform hits from the last 4 decades covering anything from Elvis to Kaiser Chiefs, Lulu and Madness to Abba.
