    Vancouver Festival for 2007

Next June, King’s Lynn will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Vancouver.

The event, just announced by the Council, will take place from 18-24 June 2007.
King's Lynn will be buzzing with activity with historical drama, a people's banquet, music, carnival and dancing.

It is also hoped that the tall ship, Earl of Pembroke, will be visiting the town.

Vancouver was a great sailor and navigator, ranking alongside Nelson, and like Nelson, he was born in West Norfolk.
As captain of the Discovery, he was responsible for charting the coast of North-West America and naming of the city of Vancouver in Canada.

Full Press Release from the Council:

Next June, King's Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council, in partnership with local organisations, is proud to be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Vancouver.

Vancouver was, in his time, a great sailor and navigator, ranking alongside Nelson, and like Nelson, he was born in West Norfolk. His father was the Custom Officer for the port of King's Lynn working from the Custom House. George Vancouver began his sailing career as a boy on expeditions with Captain Cook. He went on to become Master of his own ship, the Discovery, and was responsible for charting the coast of North-West America and the subsequent naming of Vancouver, British Columbia. In fact, many of the coves and bays are named after places in West Norfolk.

Cllr Nick Daubney, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Regeneration, said: 'It is right that we celebrate the birth of Captain Vancouver. A son of Lynn, he played a major role in shaping the modern world, as we know it. Lynn has a long and proud maritime heritage as much as an exciting future.'

During the week beginning 18-24 June there will be festivities for all ages – schools, families and members of the community – in celebration of our maritime hero. It is also hoped that this programme of events will entice tourists from home and abroad and especially from Canada. A special programme will be on offer to schools across different heritage venues in King's Lynn.

From the Friday evening until the Sunday afternoon, King's Lynn will be buzzing with late 18th century activity in and amongst its beautiful merchant houses and heritage sites, involving interactive historical drama, a people's banquet, music, carnival and dancing. It is also hoped that the tall ship, Earl of Pembroke, will be visiting King's Lynn over the weekend, moored in the Boal Quay. Members of the public will have the opportunity of going aboard this majestic, square-rigged ship.

Cllr Daubney continued: 'The whole event will be funded by many different sources, including a Heritage Lottery Funding bid. We also hope to have major corporate sponsorship.'

A special website will be launched shortly on to which information of the whole programme of events will be added as it becomes available. The Vancouver theme will also be continued into the King's Lynn Festival 2007.

    Local news round up

Locals have been going "football crazy" at the start of the World Cup.
Red and white flags can be seen flapping everywhere on cars and buildings, and there's a definite feeling of excitement in the air! On Saturday, almost
every other person in town seemed to be wearing a red or white England shirt. Good Luck England!

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Lynn on Thursday evening after making
threats to kill with a samurai sword. The man was shot by trained firearms officers using a taser gun, during a struggle on a balcony
at Vicarage House in Hillington Square.

Local binmen are threatening to strike again, because of attacks, pay and working conditions. Talks are continuing between
    unions and the employer Cleanaway.

    10k Run a great success

The first Great East Anglia Run was a great success on Sunday.
1600 runners from around East Anglia raced around the town, raising money for charity.

It was such a success that Race director Ian Vaughan Arbuckle said the race is here to stay, and
Bespak have already shown interest in sponsoring the race for the next three years.

Top Kenyan athlete Patrick Mizohke (pictured in the Walks) won the men's race in
a remarkable time of just 29mins 13secs, while Cathy Mutwa won the women's race in 33mins 30secs..

Picture on left shows just a few of the hundreds of runners as they race through the park. More pictures available soon...

Sadly, a 25-year-old runner has died in hospital after collapsing at the finish line.
He was later named as Duncan Gooderson, a keen sportsman from Ringstead, Norfolk. Race director Ian Vaughan-Arbuckle said: "It is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts go out to his family."
