King's Lynn Race for Life 2007
Women everywhere are invited to take part in the 2007 Race for Life event, taking place in Kings Lynn at Houghton Hall, on Tuesday 26 June. Organisers, Cancer Research UK, say they would love you to take part and help smash their fundraising target of £154,000 - and have a great day out with family and friends too! The event starts at 19:30, but please make sure you arrive an hour before so that you can take part in the warm-up. The 5km course will take you round Houghton Hall and the surrounding areas. It’s a fantastic location, and this year Cancer Research UK want to see 1750 women run, jog or walk the course to help more people survive cancer. Since it started in 1994, Race for Life has grown to become the UK’s biggest women-only fundraising event. All the money raised by participants helps fund the crucial work of Cancer Research UK. The full venue address is: Houghton Hall, Houghton, Kings Lynn, PE31 6UE. www.raceforlife.org

How we became Ambassadors for Lynn
We are now "King's Lynn and West Norfolk Ambassadors" - and that's official! We acquired the status after attending a day course at the Guildhall on Thursday, learning how to promote a positive image of the area, attract visitors, and generally spread the word about the wonderful quality of life and the good things about living and working in West Norfolk. We were two out of nine participants attending the Council-run course, which is held regularly, and open to anyone with an interest in promoting West Norfolk. A free lunch and tour of the Guildhall was included, and we were all presented with badges and signed certificates from the Borough Mayoress, Ann Clery-Fox, a very charming lady with lots of tales to tell of her experiences during the last year. But the funniest anecdote of the day came from Ambassador Trainer, Karen Kennedy-Hill. While she was working at the Hunstanton Tourist Information Centre, she was asked by a confused visitor if the tall building they could see on the horizon was in France or Belgium? "No, that's Boston," replied Karen, to which the amazed reply was "Good grief, you mean you can see America from here!" We all rolled up laughing!

Festival celebrating Captain Vancouver
A weekend of celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Lynn's most famous sailor, Captain George Vancouver, is set to take place in June. The arrival of the tall ship, the Earl of Pembroke, on Thursday June 21 will herald the start of the Festival, with a packed programme of music, dance, street entertainment, talks, exhibitions and childrens activities. Events will also include seafood-tasting, a Georgian-style ball, and demonstrations of traditional trades, such as rope-making. People will be able to go on board the Earl of Pembroke while it is moored at Boal Quay, and the festival as a whole, which runs from June 24, will be based around the quayside and the historic heart of the town. A lot of the festival will be free of charge, and we are expecting lots of visitors from all over the world. There's been a lot of interest from Canada and the United States. More information is available at www.vancouver250.com, or by contacting the Lynn tourist information centre on 01553 763044 for a festival leaflet.

Massive wind farms plan for The Wash
The prospect of huge wind farms sited in The Wash have been welcomed by environmentalists. Up to 183 new turbines, could be placed at two sites 5km east of Skegness, which would be visible from Hunstanton. The two 90 MW wind farms, are together expected to provide enough power for more than 130,000 homes and to reduce CO2 emissions by 500,000 tonnes in a year. Local MP Henry Bellingham is in agreement with enviromentalists Friends of the Earh and Greenpeace, that harnessing off-shore wind is "the way things should go." But the giant offshore wind farm scheme has it's opponents. Local residents are worried about underground cables and the effects on wildlife, both on land and at sea. Fishermen are worried about the possible threat to their livelihoods due to disruptions to the sea bed. John Lake, 63, from King's Lynn, who has been in the fishing industry for 30 years, said calls for research into the effects the turbines will have on the fishing grounds have been ignored. Mr Lake, who runs Lake Shellfish Ltd with his son Neil, said between 400-500 fishermen would be affected. Construction of the wind farms could begin in 2009 and Centrica is also investigating the possibility of developing three further sites, with up to 166 turbines each. (see map)
