Plane Crash Update
We were asked about a light aircraft which was believed to have crashed into Kings Lynn cemetery sometime around 1924. The crash actually occured on Sunday, May 2nd, 1926. A "daring exhibition of crazy flying" in Lynn culmonated in tragedy when the aircraft - a Sopwith Gnu - crashed into the Hardwick Cemetary killing the pilot, Captain Arthur Orde Bigg-Wither. A field just over the Exton's Road level crossing had been hired for a week long series of passenger trips and exhibition flights. On Sunday a special event was due to take place, to include crazy flying and wing walking while the aircraft was travelling at 90 mph. Despite a strong gale of wind, the silver aircraft took off and Geoffrey Mark Lloyd, the stunt performer, did his routine of wing walking while the aircraft circled around the open spaces to the south of the town. Without warning the engine stopped, and the aircraft went into a spiral nose-dive, finishing up with the machine crashing into the cemetary after breaking its fall on some large 60ft high elm trees. Captain Bigg-Wither suffered fatal chest and internal injuries. Lloyd escaped with serious but not fatal injuries. A well known local man, Arthur Barrett, who had gone along as a passenger, had a remarkable escape, landing in the trees unhurt apart from a bruised face and damaged hand. Unusual pictures of the town.
A King's Lynn company has taken some highly unusual pictures of the town - from the top of a 55-foot mast. Highpics, based in Tennyson Road, uses a state of the art high quality digital camera mounted on a 16 metre telescopic mast to take high level pictures of properties, roofs, farms, land or anything else. Pictures are taken with a high quality digital camera directly onto a laptop and controlled by the user which gives a unique aerial perspective on properties and buildings - a viewpoint previously only achievable from aircraft or scaffolding. www.highpics.co.uk
