Earthquake shakes Lynn
King's Lynn residents were shaken in their beds this morning by the biggest earthquake in the UK for almost 25 years. Choks, posting on the King's Lynn Forums said: "I was woken up at 1.00 am by terrible rumbling. Everything in the house was shaking/rattling ... it was quite scary." BBC reporter Lynn Crombie in Norwich said she was "absolutely terrified" and thought somebody "had driven into the side of the house". "Then I thought somebody must have kicked the door in and everything continued to rattle inside the house." The British Geological Survey said the epicentre of the 5.3 magnitude quake was near Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, just 60 miles away. Streets in Gainsborough were evacuated due to falling chimneys, but there have been no reports of damage or injury so far in Norfolk. The largest known earthquake ever to strike the UK was in June 1931, in the North Sea near Great Yarmouth. It had a magnitude of 6.1. Tell us your experiences of the earthquake by sending us an email. This seizmogram of the earthquake recorded by the British Geological Survey Seizmograph Network, shows the quake struck at 00:56 and lasted about 10 seconds.

Mart opens - weather colder!
Keeping with tradition, the Mart opened on Thursday with the weather turning much colder after the recent mini-heatwave. The Mayoress, Kathy Mellish, opened the fair, saying as long as the weather didn't turn any worse, all should be okay. She said anyone planning to take a ride on this year's top attraction, the Mighty Booster, should make sure they emptied their pockets, as they would be taken 130 feet into the air and turned upside down! After prayers were said, and the National Anthem played, the Mayoress was let loose on the dodgems with the other dignitaries, and they all seemed to be having a whale of a time. Meanwhile over at the Mighty Booster, people were paying 4 pounds a time to have the living daylights scared out of them, being spun around at ever increasing speed, while being flung upside down. Everyone was coming off the ride looking much paler than when they joined - so take the ride at your peril. Of course, all the usual glittering stalls and fair rides were there to be enjoyed, and the event is due to continue for the next two weeks. (see previous post for details) Larger versions of these pictures can be seen in our Gallery. Labels: events
