    Google turns out the lights

google_blackout.gifGoogle users will notice today that they “turned the lights out” on the Google Homepage, as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone.

This is one of those feel good moves by Google that might actually have an impact: Whether or not you believe climate change is a significant threat to the planet, becoming more energy efficient has obvious economic and ecological benefits to us, and raising awareness around that can only be a good thing.

    King's Lynn Fiction Festival

Beryl BainbridgeAuthor Beryl Bainbridge will be headlining this year's Fiction Festival, which runs over the weekend of 14-16 March.

The Literature Festivals are held in King's Lynn, during a single weekend in March and September each year, presenting some of the best of contemporary writers in a congenial and informal setting.

These festivals, which are held in the historic area of King's Lynn, have been running in an unbroken annual series since 1984.

Writers of national and international repute present readings, talks, interviews, and discussions. One session is usually entirely devoted to discussion of a topical literary issue. This provides an excellent opportunity to hear stimulating ideas from the visiting writers in conversation together.

Other writers appearing this year include Louis de Bernieres, Liz Jenson, Marion Molteno, Tom Phelan, Scarlett Thomas, Aminatta Forna, Francis King, Julie Myerson, D J Taylor and Irving Weinman.
