Remembrance Sunday

Poppy Lest We Forget
Remembrance Sunday ceremonies are taking place across west Norfolk on Sunday, 14 November to remember those who gave their lives in service for their country.

The Borough Mayor Cllr Zipha Christopher will lay a wreath at the war memorial in the Tower Gardens in King’s Lynn. [Map] The memorial was recently rededicated to include reference to all those who have died since 1945 as well as those who died during the two world wars.

The event will start with parades from the Town Hall along St James’s Street to the Tower Gardens. The first to set off will be a group of veterans. Any veteran wishing to take part in this parade should arrive at the Town Hall yard by 10.15am.

The Mayor will lead a procession of civic representatives from the Town Hall to the war memorial where she, along with representatives from various organisations, will lay a wreath. Around 40 wreaths will be laid this year.

The King’s Lynn Town Band will play solemn music in the Tower Gardens from 10.45am and the civic procession will leave from the Town Hall at the same time, followed by the general procession, consisting of the contingent from Royal Air Force Marham and members of the three Cadet Forces. For the first time, members of the TS Vancouver Corps of Drums will be playing during the processions.

The bugler will play The Last Post, signalling the beginning of the two minutes silence and the start of the ceremony.

Following the ceremony, at approximately 11.45am, the civic procession will parade to St. Margaret’s Church where a service will be conducted by the Reverend Christopher Ivory, with the sermon being preached by The Venerable Hugh McCurdy, Archdeacon of Huntingdon & Wisbech.

Elsewhere in the borough, wreaths will be laid to mark the occasion. The Deputy Mayor Cllr Trevor Manley will lay a wreath in Fincham, which is a village within his ward, and also in Downham Market; wreaths will also be laid in Hunstanton and Gaywood.
