Call out for local artists

The King’s Lynn Arts Centre is calling artists from 7 counties across the Eastern region to submit entries for the prestigious Eastern Open Art Competition and exhibition.

The competition has evolved into the largest and longest-standing regional competition for Visual Arts in the country. Now celebrating its 43rd year it offers the opportunity for artists to have their work seen by internationally renowned selectors from the art world as well as a chance of winning an award.

If you are an artist who lives in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk or Suffolk and are aged 16 or over then this could be your opportunity to have your works selected. There are 11 awards up for grabs, with the top prize of £2000 for the Best in Show and further prizes ranging from £1000 to £50.

The eminent judges from the art world this year are: 20th Century Design Expert, TV presenter, author, and Applied Arts Patron of the King’s Lynn Arts Centre, Mark Hill, freelance curator and Director of Fermynwoods Contemporary Art, Yasmin Canvin, and Jessica Lack, who has been Arts Writer for The Guardian for 12 years and is also co-author of “Tate Guide to Modern Art Terms”

This year will also see an alternative opportunity for artists, with works chosen by a lay selection panel known as “Community Choice”. These judges drawn from the local community following an application process, will choose their own ‘salon des refusés’ and award a prize. Their choice will be exhibited in the Old Warehouse Gallery.

Artists can submit their work to the following collection centres:

Haddenham Craft Centre, Ely
Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester
The Cut, Halesworth
Courtyard Arts Centre, Hertford
Zeroeast, Norwich
King’s Lynn Arts Centre, King’s Lynn

The exhibition with selected works from both international and local judges runs from Saturday 31st March until Saturday 19th May and will provide a mix of innovation and tradition not to mention a unique opportunity to view the best art on offer in the East of England.
