Ancient treasures unearthed on Norfolk Coast

Channel 4's Time Team at Brancaster

Ancient Roman coins and pottery have been unearthed by Channel 4’s Time Team in Norfolk, with the assistance of history groups based in King’s Lynn.

On the dig at Brancaster

The secret Time Team excavation took place over 3 days last week on land belonging to the National Trust at Brancaster with the aim of getting a better understanding of the state of preservation of the ancient Roman fort of Branodunum, which is located to the east of the modern English village of Brancaster.

Some in-situ walls were uncovered during the excavation. Other finds included 2,000 year old roman coins and pottery.

The Time Team were invited by the National Trust with consent from English Heritage and Norfolk’s County Archaeologist based at Gressenhall. Members from local groups involved in the Brancaster dig included: King’s Lynn Metal Detecting Club, Castle Rising History Group and West Norfolk & King’s Lynn Archaeological Society.

The successful 3 day event should be screened on channel 4 sometime in the early part of next year. The site has produced some great results and is one of the Time Team programs not to be missed. It was also a special occasion for them as they celebrated their 200th program over a period of 19 years.

This National Trust Welcome notice board located adjacent to the Norfolk Coast Path tells us that “You are standing near the Roman beach where naval and trading vessels would have landed. The fort stood in the field beyond the one in front of you.” By following a path nearby it is possible to see the main fort enclosure and another information board. Photo: Nigel Stickells
