May the 4th be with you! Launch of Bespak GEAR 2014

Two Star Wars characters have cheekily reminded everyone that this year’s Bespak GEAR race takes place on May the 4th, which happens to coincide with Star Wars Day.

The 9th annual Bespak Grand East Anglia Run was launched on Tuesday by Bespak Managing Director Keyvan Djamarani, who was joined by Race Director Roger Partridge, Assistant Race Director Peter Duhig and Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds. The costumed characters were a reminder that whilst this is a serious athletics event, it is also an opportunity for fun runners to raise cash for local charities.

This year the event takes place on Sunday, 4th May 2014. Starting at 10.30am in the newly-revamped Tuesday Market Place in King’s Lynn, the fast, flat course takes runners on a loop through the town centre, through The Walks and along the waterfront, showcasing some of the town’s key heritage and retail areas.

Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “The event just seems to go from strength to strength. We are hoping for even more entries this year and have already had 160 entries prior to our publicity launch. And with the date coinciding with Star Wars Day, we are also looking forward to seeing lots of Star Wars fancy dress in the fun run and the light-hearted side of the main event.”

“We have completely refreshed the website to make it even easier for people to find out the information they need and to enter online.”

The event, which first took place in May 2006, was designed to encourage people to get into running as part of an active, healthy lifestyle, as well as to showcase the shopping centre and heritage areas to new visitors. In 2010 the Mini GEAR fun run was introduced to broaden the appeal of the event to younger people and beginners. It is now a popular fixture on the athletics calendar and regularly attracts around 2,000 runners.

Borough Council Sports Development Manager and Race Director Roger Partridge, added: “Last year’s event was our best yet and I’m hoping for even more entries this year. With a fast, flat course and a choice of distances, the event really is suitable for people of any age or ability. This year we are proud to be hosting the British Masters National 10k Road Championships, which we hope will bring some new names to the event”.

There are generous cash prizes for Bespak GEAR category winners and everyone taking part will receive a quality medal and goody bag.
