On 4th October the United States Air Force’s 67th Special Operations Squadron (SOS), assigned to the 352nd Special Operations Group at RAF Mildenhall, will be granted Freedom of Hunstanton in recognition of the vital role they played during the flood on 31st January 1953.

A fierce storm combined with a tidal surge led to sea water breaching defences, leaving families stranded, vulnerable to the rising water. Whilst honouring the squadron, the town will also remember one particular member, Reis Leming, who saved 27 people.

Mr Leming’s widow, Kathy, and son, Michael will be granted Freedom of Hunstanton as a tribute to Mr Leming, who died in 2012. There were 31 people, including 16 American citizens, who lost their lives, but the death toll would have undoubtedly been higher had it not been for the courage of volunteer rescuers the US Air Force 67th Air Rescue Squadron stationed at nearby RAF Sculthorpe (now known as the 67th Special Operations Squadron and currently stationed at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk), who mobilised swiftly.

At 11.45 am the squadron will march towards the Spinney led by the Norwich Pipe Band, where Hunstanton Mayor, Councillor Carol Bower will present the ceremonial scroll to Lieutenant Colonel John Peak, the parade will head towards Greevegate and proceed to Cliff Parade where the parade will fall out.

The Hunstanton Concert Band will play in the performance area of the Spinney at 1pm. Following the parade, an exhibition about the floods will be on permanent public display in the Hunstanton Heritage Centre.
