Residents and visitors to King’s Lynn are being invited to join carol services in the town next weekend (20 and 21 December).

King’s Lynn Minster Congregation Choir will perform a selection of traditional Christmas carols around the Christmas tree inside the Custom House from 11 am on Saturday, 20 December. Following the performance, mince pies and shortbread will be served. The event is free to attend and there will be an opportunity for shoppers to pick up some Christmas gifts, as the Custom House, which is home to the Tourist Information Centre, stocks a range of books covering local history and points of interest, gifts and prints.

On Sunday 21 December a special Remembering Christmas 2014 carol service will be held in Tuesday Market Place from 3.00 – 3.30 pm. The service, which will be led by the Right Reverend Jonathan Meyrick, the Bishop of Lynn and the Reverend Canon Christopher Ivory, Vicar of King’s Lynn Minster is being held in acknowledgement of the centenary of the First World War and remembers the poignant Christmas Day truce between the German and Allied troops. Carols, which will be performed by the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Choir, will include Stille Nacht (Silent night). The choir will be joined by volunteers, dressed in military uniforms, from The Bridge for Heroes.

Later that evening, at 6.30 pm, the annual Town Carol Service will be held at King’s Lynn Minster (St Margaret’s Church). Mince pies and mulled wine will be served following the service.

Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Marketing, said: “Christmas carols are such a lovely way of bringing people together to celebrate the season. These events, will certainly add to the town’s festive atmosphere, as well as providing an opportunity to reflect upon the centenary of the brief truce that was forged on Christmas Day in 1914, and I hope lots of people will come along and join in.”
