Volunteers’ work acknowledged at civic awards

civic awards for volunteersThirty-nine people, who between them have clocked up decades of voluntary and community service, were acknowledged with a special award from the Mayor of the Borough of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk. The award ceremony took place at the town hall on Wednesday 30 March.

The judging panel consisted of the mayor, deputy mayor Cllr David Whitby, Mrs Jill Bennett of BBC Radio Norfolk, Mrs Alison Croose, and retired borough council Civics Officer, Mrs Penny Harrison. A record number of nominations were submitted to the judging panel this year; over twice the number submitted last year.

Speaking about the awards ceremony, Mayor Cllr Colin Manning, said: “It was a real pleasure and privilege to meet, and present awards to, so many local people who have made such a difference to their local communities. Often we hear of negative stories and so it was particularly nice that these volunteers have been recognised by their local communities for their good work and sincere dedication.”

The award winners were – Mick Akers, Stina Burger, Lydia Brice, Steven Cable, Melanie Carter, Vanessa Cock, Edward Dore, Susan Fearn, Gloria Fenton, Marie Jackson, Vicki Fletcher, Michael Frost, Sheila Fysh, James Garner, John Garner, Dr Steven Grove, Emma Gibson, Martin Goodchild, Ann Gotts, Norma Grand, Michael Harpley, Angela Irwin, Ann Johnson, Paula Kellingray, James Lewis, Jean Parkes, Rosemary Orphanides, Beverley Randall, Sue Renwick, Dudley Scott, Trudie Smart, David Smith, Michelle Smith, Patricia Stanley, Christine Twell, Bridget Wells, Lynne Wheeler, Thomas Wheeler and Elizabeth Wheeler.

The Mayor’s Civic Awards for Voluntary Service were first established in 1995 by the then Mayor Cllr Fred Juniper. They were designed to recognise the time and effort given by people in the borough to help and support others and to raise funds for charity. In his memory, each award certificate depicts a branch of a juniper tree.

The awards are supported by Your Local Paper and BBC Radio Norfolk.
