Restored “Baden Powell” to sail on the Ouse again

The Baden Powell as it was …

The rejuvenated vessel Baden Powell is set to sail the Ouse again in August.

Volunteers have been busy working on the boat at Terrington St John and will transfer the vessel to King’s Lynn Docks in July for final preparations.

On an appropriate August tide Baden Powell will come through the dock entrance and into her normal home, the River Great Ouse. There will be a naming ceremony for the boat at the pontoons near Marriotts Warehouse and Hanse House. Lynn’s historic boat will then tie up to a buoy in the public eye off the quay.

In September the first passengers will join the Baden Powell at the pontoons and go up and down the river to learn of the importance of the river to the establishment of the town and its prosperity as a trading port from the 11th Century or before.

Father’s Day Workshop will bring fun to town centre.

Families are being invited into the Vancouver Quarter on Saturday 17 June to attend a special Father’s Day workshop.

Following the success of their Mother’s Day workshop, children will be able to make trophies and decorate plaques to help the shopping centre celebrate all the amazing dads in town.

Running from 10am to 3pm in the unit opposite to Wilko in New Conduit Street, this free drop-in session is perfect for little ones to make a handmade surprise for their dad. It is suitable for children aged between three and eight years old but they must be supervised by adults at all times.

“Our Father’s Day workshop will be ensure kids have a fun-filled time in the heart of King’s Lynn,” said Vancouver Quarter’s marketing and events assistant David Blackmore. “This workshop is designed to bring some fun to the town centre but will also give parents some free activities to do with their children whilst also supporting the town centre.

“There will be plenty of other free events in the Vancouver Quarter this year, including the return of our very popular Halloween event and Christmas Grotto. Follow us Twitter, like our page on Facebook and keep an eye on our website for details of events when they are confirmed.”

Water Ski racing on the Ouse

For the third year running the Historic waterfront of King’s Lynn and the river Great Ouse will play host to the Hanseatic Water Ski Race. The event has grown in stature each year and is now ranking as one of the best venues in the UK and Europe.

This year’s event will see the return of Formula 1, 2 and 3 water-ski racing to the South Quay with racing on Saturday 17 June and Sunday 18 June.

Six races will be staged each day over the two days including an under 8s race which was new and very well received at last year’s event, with competitors travelling from far and wide to take part.

The Hanseatic Race has firmly established itself and now in its third year matches the famous Diamond Race which takes place in the Hanseatic town of Antwerp in Belgium.

There will also be fun family activities happening on the quayside across both days. These will include food stalls, sweet stalls and ice cream, an outside BBQ and bar, face-painting, and more. Costumed characters will also be on hand to join in the fun.

The races will start at 10:00am each day through until 3:00pm with full details of the schedule published at www.kingslynnskirace.co.uk.

Jason Russell, president of Hunstanton Ski Club and chairman of the Hanseatic Ski Race, said: “Anyone who witnessed last year’s event first hand will want to come back for more and see this breath-taking spectacle again. Highly tuned power boats reaching speeds of 100mph plus, at the same time demonstrating the skill of the boat crews enhanced by the courage and fitness of the skiers being pulled behind. It’s rare to be able to see the racing from such a great vantage point, as most races take place at sea. This Ski race just gets better and will continue to go from strength to strength – it’ll be loud, exciting, and most of all, unforgettable.”
