King’s Lynn Mart 2013

Mart Poster 2013

Yes it’s that time of year again, when the fun fair comes to the Tuesday Market Place, here in King’s Lynn.

The official opening by the Mayor will be on Thursday 14th February at 12 noon. Family Day will be on Monday the 18th, from 12 noon till 10pm, when all rides will be a just £1, apart from the Dodgems.

The Mart will be open from Thursday 14th to Saturday 23rd, opening on weekdays from 6pm and on Saturdays from 12 noon. The Mart will be closed on Sunday.

Traditionally, the Mart is the first funfair in the Showmen’s calendar where new rides are tried out and old favourites brought out from winter storage.

Some of us dread the Mart, as we know it usually brings with it a spell of cold weather. But others look forward to all the fun of the fair, having a go on the side stalls and buying candy floss, rock and all types of other sweeties from the mobile shops!

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once …

ALLO ALLO POSTER

“Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once..”

The King’s Lynn Operatic and Dramatic Society – KLODS – are presenting their production of ‘Allo ‘Allo by David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd at the Arts Centre in November.

The stage version of ‘Allo ‘Allo is everything you’d expect from the enduring BBC television classic and more. Local café owner, René Artois, is in a bit of a pickle. The German army have occupied the quaint French town where he lives, stealing its valuable treasures.

Apart from the first cuckoo clock ever made, The Fallen Madonna (with the big boobies) by Van Klomp has fallen into the hands of the local commandant, Col von Stohm. Hitler wants the painting. But Strohm intends to keep it, forcing René to hide it in his café.

All of this would be fine if René wasn’t hiding two clueless British airmen, forcibly working for the resistance, flirting with the waitresses and avoiding the Gestapo as well as advances from his own wife.

The last thing he needs is a British agent disguised as a policeman trying to help…!

Currently in their 111th year, KLODS have been consistently performing at the King’s Lynn Art’s Centre since it’s re-opening in 1951. Local teacher and first time director Jill Catmull is at the helm of KLODS 206th production.

‘Allo ‘Allo is a comedy event not to be missed!

Children welcome – contains mild adult references.

Allo Allo is at at the King’s Lynn Art’s Centre, from November 1st – 3rd.

Review ~ ‘A Classic Experience’ in Gaywood

KLYT A Classic Experience

A cleverly written script and an enthusiastic performance by a talented group of young actors, combined to produce a hugely enjoyable experience on Friday evening.

Not really knowing what to expect, we waited patiently for the curtains to open along with a considerably sized audience at King’s Lynn Academy’s North Hall, in Gaywood – It turned out to be a real treat.

The King’s Lynn Youth Theatre’s production of ‘A Classic Experience’, written and directed by Luke Goold, entertained us from start to finish with it’s story of a disastrous Norfolk school trip to ancient Italy.

There were less Ancient Wonders and more Catastrophic Blunders, as the group of sixth formers got involved with bank-robbers, inept secret agents and the world’s most deadly assassin.

Some amusingly played characters, original stage effects, lighting and music, all combined for a very entertaining evening out.

So, ‘Well Done’ to the King’s Lynn Youth Theatre!

If you ever get the chance to see one of their productions, we would highly recommend that you go along.

Ben from King’s Lynn says “Take Me Out”

Ben picks out his 'dream date' Jude

Let the horn see the blower. Who’s coming down the Love Lift tonight?

It’s 19-year-old gymnast Ben Brason from King’s Lynn!

Ben was seen on the ITV1 dating show Take Me Out on Saturday night, and performed some of his famous gymnastic flips for 30 sexy girls from around the UK, who were looking for love.

Ben, who is currently studying at university in Leeds, told KLFM’s Simon Rowe “I really enjoyed it to be honest. Great having all my mates there too cheering me on!”

Ben eventually picked out Jude for his dream date after she demonstrated her “Pinnochio Dance”. The pair are now being whisked off to the ‘Island of Love’, and you will be able to see what happened on next Saturday’s show.

You can watch highlights of the show at www.itv.com/takemeout/previously/2012/week-ten.

Denver Mill features on BBC-2’s The Fixer

Alex Polizzi and Simon Rowe filming at Denver Mill

We were at the filming of the Denver Mills Farmer’s Market and took this photo of KLFM’s Simon Rowe talking to Alex Polizzi.

A local windmill featured this week on the BBC-2 documentary “The Fixer”. Alex Polizzi was called to the family firm who run Denver Mills, near Downham Market, finding they were in dire need of help.

Just before Alex arrived, a tragedy had struck. Three of the sails had crashed off the windmill, leaving the Abel family absolutely bereft. A business already in trouble had just hit rock bottom.

Alex found a business that didn’t know what it was, with the site comprising of the windmill itself, a tea shop, gift shop, function room and rental cottages. She also found a family that, although passionate about milling flour, were clueless about how to run a business.

Relationships had started to implode, with mother Lindsay not knowing anything about their finances and son-in-law Duncan angry that the family cared more about milling than money. Alex had a huge challenge on her hands. She needed to get the family focussed, and fast.

Identifying that the shop and the cafe were profitable ventures, she got the family to concentrate on those areas. Realising that they were underselling their high-quality produce, she took them to hamper producers Forman and Field to learn how to package and sell their local produce properly.

She also took them to historical site branding experts Imagemakers, to help give Denver Mill a new cohesive brand identity. Most of all though, Alex needed to give the family their confidence back so they could continue after she had gone. She helped them set up a farmers market at the Mill to showcase the new improved Denver Mills and its produce.

During the programme, the family were seen going to the studios of local radio station KLFM, to produce a commercial to promote the farmers market.

KL.FM's Hometime presenter Simon Rowe

KL.FM's Hometime presenter Simon Rowe

Local radio station KL.FM has been voted “best radio station in East Anglia” in The Radio Academy 2011 Awards.

The Judges were full of praise for the station:

“KL.FM is a great listen with a dedicated staff and a finger firmly on the local pulse.

“Being instrumental in stopping the closure of RAF Marham; supporting ‘Festival Too’ and the local ‘Race For Life’ illustrate how at one with its audience the station is. In addition, the high production values and content of their breakfast features rival even national efforts.

“KL.FM’s entry was a brilliant shop window for all they stand for: informative, strong, local knowledge, entertainment, approachability and fun!”

KL.FM will now go forward into the Station of the Year (under 300,000) Award category at the 2012 Sony Radio Academy Awards 2012.

Let’s wish them luck!
