Millennium Project

King's Lynn's waterfront is being transformed by the town's multi-million pound Millennium Project. Work on the North Sea Haven project has now begun, and this artists impression shows how King's Staithe Square will look when finished.

The development is split into seven sections, and all work is expected to be completed by the end of 1999:

1 The West Lynn Walkway will be a boardwalk on top of the tidal defence wall which will link the Nar Valley Way and Peter Scott Way.

2 The Outer Purfleet is due to be dredged, and a barrage will be built across its mouth which can be opened to allow historic ships to visit the Custom House. It will permanently retain a water depth of 2.5 metres.

3 Purfleet Street is to be partly pedestrianised with paving stones to improve the approach to the Custom House.

4 The Inner Purfleet waterway is to be cleaned and a walkway positioned above it. College students are designing a new landscape for the area.

5 Marriots Wharehouse is being refurbished and will include the Green Quay Interpretation Centre which will deal with all aspects of the Wash, it's flora, fauna and human activity. It will include a cafe, shop and information centre.

6 King's Staithe Square and South Quay are to be pedestrianised with paving stones and given an esplanade. (see picture)

7 King's Staithe Square is to be extended towards the Outer Purfleet to provide a new outdoor area for entertainment.
