The Bridge for Heroes
The Bridge for Heroes is a charity that operates a contact centre where serving troops and veterans from all three services can drop in for a free tea or coffee as well as access to support services and advice on issues relevant to their interests, such as war pensions, priority access to healthcare and the availability of support mechanisms.
The centre staff are also available to offer a listening ear and emotional support to visitors.
The centre is sited in premises in South Clough Lane off Tower Street, almost opposite the Majestic Cinema. It is one of the first of its kind in the country, and combines the contact centre function with a charity shop, helping to support the charity and keep the centre running and offering services to those who need them.
The shop sells both donated second-hand goods and The Bridge for Heroes own merchandise. A small military museum area is also part of the shop, and is slowly being built up from donations of uniforms, medals, photos and equipment.
It is open to the public from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday, and people can arrange individual appointments between 3pm and 5.30pm if they wish to talk about their needs in private.
