The Lavender Hill Mob Theatre Company
The Lavender Hill Mob Theatre Company brings together a whole spectrum of people whether they have a disability, lack confidence, lack self-esteem or are just too shy to get up and do something, especially at school for fear of being bullied or ridiculed for what they are.
This intergenerational group carries the same ethos as the Chicken Shed Theatre in North London – Everyone is Welcome! Les Miles who trained and worked there works what only can be described as ‘Magic’ on these youngsters and people. She carefully encourages them to utilise, project and improve the skills they have.
Their achievements and abilities are then showcased on stage. Something which they all keenly look forward to! The public can then see that no matter what problems people have, be it physical or mental, they can still achieve their hopes and dreams.
No auditions are necessary. Everyone has an important part to play and everyone is important and plays a part – they are all included!
Moving to Norfolk after a series of strokes, Les saw a niche in the area for a drama club where everyone could go. From 15 in 2001 to 60 members and counting, the group has now become a registered charity and metamorphosised into a thriving Theatre Company.
There have been lots of learning curves, tears of laughter and sorrow and lots of hurdles have been crossed on this tremendous journey of 10 years. The wonderful thing is too, is that awards have been won by individuals and by the group as a whole! The vision one day is to have a theatre of their own, with disabled access in all areas and no limitations. The plans are already drawn up – premises are now needed!
The group is self-funding and voluntarily run by a committee of dedicated members who work tirelessly in order to promote the group and what it does for the community. Workshops take place four nights a week; Monday and Tuesdays, 5 – 8pm at St Edmunds Church Hall Hunstanton and Wednesdays and Thursdays 5 – 8pm at the Village Hall, Priory Lane, North Wootton. New members welcome.
